THE ERASMUS GRANT: HOW IT WORKS
An internship in Valencia sounds amazing, but what does it cost and what can you get in return? The Erasmus grant can cover a significant portion of your costs. Below you will find everything you need to know, whether you are a secondary vocational or higher professional education student.
WHAT IS THE ERASMUS GRANT
The Erasmus grant is a contribution towards travel and accommodation costs, funded by the European Commission. You can decide for yourself how to spend the money: rent, transport, living expenses, or simply a fun evening with friends.
HOW MUCH DO YOU GET?
The amount is a minimum of €200 per month and is further determined by various factors, including the destination and whether you are studying or doing an internship. In most cases, students receive between €250 and €450 per month. Spain falls into the 'middle category' of countries, which means that the allowance is generally at the higher end of that range.
HOW LONG DO YOU RECEIVE THE GRANT?
You will receive the Erasmus grant for a minimum of three months and a maximum of twelve months. In most cases, the grant is paid out in two installments. The first installment is paid as soon as the Learning Agreement and the internship contract have been signed by you, your educational institution, and the internship company. You will receive the remaining 30% after the internship has been completed and all documents have been submitted.
MBO STUDENTS.

Good news: the Erasmus grant is available to students at all MBO levels, provided the school has Erasmus accreditation. As a first step, contact your school's internationalisation coordinator or internship coordinator to check if your institution is affiliated.
Conditions for MBO:
• Your school has Erasmus accreditation
• You apply for the grant through your own school, not directly with the EU
Students with a disability, dyslexia, or a chronic illness can also apply for additional funding via the 'Top-up' scheme within Erasmus+.
Important to know: even if you meet all the conditions, there is no guarantee of an award. There is a maximum number of places the school can allocate. Therefore, start as early as possible.
HBO STUDENTS.

For HBO students, an additional condition is that you must have completed your propaedeutic year or first year. An exception may be made if an internship is part of the first year of the study program.
The application process for HBO students also goes through your own educational institution. Contact your school's International Office; they will introduce you to the Erasmus coordinator for the program.
Conditions for HBO:
• Enrolled at a recognized HBO institution
• Propaedeutic year completed (or internship is part of year 1)
• Physical presence at the internship location for at least 60 days
WHEN DO YOU START THE APPLICATION?
Make sure you start the application at least four months before the start of the internship, excluding school holidays. It can take several months for the application to be approved.
So start as early as possible, because you will also have many other things to arrange during that period.
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE ERASMUS GRANT.

Receive other 30% after finishing application and filling all forms
BE AWARE! Start application at least 4 months before the start of your internship. If you dont fill in all documents in time, the financial compensation ends immediately and all compensations that yoúve already received can be reclaimed.

PT-ALLOWANCE & AWAY-FROM-HOME GRANT

ADVANTAGE
Are you temporarily going abroad as part of your Dutch study programme? Then, instead of your student travel product, you can receive a monthly allowance of €110.95 (2026 amount). You can also change your student finance from a basic grant to an away-from-home grant (if you still live at home) for a higher allowance.
The condition is that you remain enrolled full-time at your Dutch study programme.
PT-ALLOWANCE.
Are you temporarily going abroad as part of your Dutch study programme? Then, instead of your student travel product, you can receive a monthly allowance of €110.95 (2026 amount).

Apply for the allowance separately, preferably 2 months before departure.​
THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT:
1. Download te 'Educational institution declaration' en
(Verklaring onderwijsinstelling) and have it filled in by your Dutch study programme.
2. Log in to Mijn DUO and apply for the travel allowance abroad (ov-vergoeding buitenland). Go to 'My products' (Mijn producten) and select 'Student finance' (Studiefinanciering) or 'Travel product under 18' (Reisproduct onder de 18). Under 'Travel provision' (Reisvoorziening), click 'Change' (Wijzigen).

3. Upload the completed declaration. You will receive a message once your application has been processed.

WHEN DOES THE ALLOWANCE START?
The allowance starts at the earliest from the month after your application:

Does your internship or period abroad start on the 1st of the month? Then you are entitled to the allowance from that month.

Starting later in the month? Then the allowance starts the following month.
Please note: you can no longer apply for the allowance for months that have already passed.
AWAY-FROM-HOME GRANT.
Are you becoming an away-from-home student because of your move abroad? Then you can also receive an away-from-home grant:

1. Log in to My DUO to change your living situation.
2. Go to 'My products' (Mijn producten).
3. Click on 'Student finance' (Studiefinanciering).
4. Under 'Type of student finance' (Soort studiefinanciering), select your living situation.
IMPORTANT
DON'T FORGET TO STOP YOUR TRAVEL PRODUCT!
Stop your student travel product at a pick-up machine before you leave. If you don't do this in time, you will not receive an allowance for the months your travel product was still active.

Already abroad and forgot to stop your travel product? Call the Student Travel Product Customer Service on +31 85 110 99 88. If your PT-card stayed behind in the Netherlands, someone else may be able to arrange it for you.

BACK IN THE NETHERLANDS?
As soon as you're back, you can simply pick up your student travel product again at a pick-up machine.
